Damper Problems We See Most Often
The damper is the movable plate that closes the chimney when the fireplace is not in use, and fireplace and damper repair is one of the most common calls we get from older Bernardsville homes. Most older fireplaces have a cast-iron throat damper just above the firebox, and after decades of heat, moisture and rain falling through an uncapped flue, many of them rust, warp or seize. A damper that will not open forces smoke into the room. One that will not close leaves an open chimney pulling warm air out of the house all winter, which you will notice on a windy January night on the mountain.
Common damper issues we repair include rusted-through plates, broken handles and linkages, warped frames that no longer seal, and dampers that have dropped out of their track. Some can be repaired; others are better replaced. When the original damper cannot be fixed or a new one will not fit the throat, a top-sealing damper is usually the best solution.

Top-Sealing Dampers for Tall, Drafty Chimneys
A top-sealing damper mounts at the top of the flue and is opened and closed with a cable that runs down to the firebox. When closed, it seals with a gasket, stopping drafts far more effectively than a metal-on-metal throat damper. Because it sits at the top, it also keeps rain, leaves and animals out of the flue when the fireplace is not in use, a real benefit on Bernardsville's wooded lots.
These dampers work especially well on tall exterior chimneys, where a column of cold air sitting in the flue can pour down into the room when a throat damper is left open. Many models include an integrated cap and screen. We fit them to standard clay flues as well as larger, irregular estate flues, and can pair them with a new cap as part of our chimney cap and crown repair service.
Firebox, Firebrick and Smoke Chamber Repair
The firebox takes direct flame, and over years of use firebrick can crack, spall or loosen, and the joints between bricks can erode. Gaps in the firebox let heat reach the surrounding masonry and wood framing. We replace damaged firebrick and repoint joints with refractory mortar made for fireplace heat, never ordinary masonry mortar, which breaks down at high temperatures. In Bernardsville homes that burn wood hard all winter, a firebox inspection each fall is worth the few minutes it takes.
Above the damper, the smoke chamber funnels smoke into the flue. In many fireplaces built before modern codes, it was laid with stepped, rough brick that slows the smoke and collects creosote. Parging the smoke chamber with a smooth, heat-resistant coating improves draft and makes the fireplace easier to keep clean. We also check the hearth extension in front of the fireplace, which current codes require to reach at least 16 inches in front of a standard opening and 20 inches in front of larger ones.
When a Large Fireplace Smokes Into the Room
A smoky fireplace is one of the most frequent complaints in older Somerset Hills homes, and the cause is usually one of a few things. The fireplace opening may be too large for the flue, which is common in grand fireplaces designed to impress. The house may be so tight after window and insulation upgrades that the fireplace cannot draw enough air. A bathroom fan, range hood or clothes dryer may be pulling against it. Or the chimney may be too short relative to nearby rooflines or trees, or blocked by a nest or debris.
We diagnose the cause before recommending a fix. Solutions range from a smoke guard across the top of the opening, which reduces its effective size, to glass doors, a taller flue extension, a draft-improving cap, or relining. Sometimes the answer is as simple as a chimney sweep to clear an obstruction. The goal is a fireplace that draws well, so you can enjoy it on a winter evening without smoke drifting into the room.
Preserving Original Fireplaces in Older Bernardsville Homes
Original fireplaces, with their mantels, tile or stone surrounds and century-old fireboxes, are part of what gives the older homes around Olcott Square and on Bernardsville Mountain their character. Repairs on these fireplaces should keep as much original material as possible. We clean and reset loose surround tiles or stones, rebuild fireboxes with firebrick that suits the look of the original, and fit damper solutions that are invisible from the room.
1stCall Emergency Chimney handles fireplace work throughout the Somerset Hills, including homes in Peapack-Gladstone and Mendham. Every repair starts with an inspection and a written estimate, and if the chimney above the fireplace needs attention as well, our chimney repair team can handle both in one visit.
